Corso Dottorato - Bioheat Transfer
Bioheat Transfer
Author & teacher: Prof. Victoria Timchenko
Duration/Dates: 12 hours/ 5-6 June 2017 (9.00-14.00) – 7 June (10:30-12:30)
Location: Biblioteca storica (P.le Tecchio, 2nd floor)
Summary
The course aims to familiarize students with the basic steps and terminology associated with modelling of biological heat transfer. This includes developing students’ understanding of the conservation law of energy applied to heat transfer in biological tissues and basic computational models involved. The course also will involve development of practical expertise of solving bioheat problem with a commercial code COMSOL.
Requirements
Fundamentals of Heat Transfer Theory.
Contents
Day 1 (Computational methodology)
1. Conservation of energy and thermal governing equations.
2. The bioheat equation
3. Thermal boundary conditions
4. Perfusion models
5. Setting a bioheat model using COMSOL software
Day 2 (Examples of research)
1. Laser induced hyperthermia for cancer treatment (with and without gold nanoparticles)
2. Water-Filtered Infrared-A Radiation (WIRA) hyperthermia of superficial tissues
3. Effects of clustering of gold nanoparticles on the optical properties
4. Hyperthermia with magnetic nanoparticles
Day 3
Written exam
Methods and tools:
The course will be presented as a two days’ workshop followed by written test at the end of the course. Lectures will be designed to cover the terminology and core concepts of bioheat transfer. Built on the lecture topics research examples will be given to show how the theory is applied in practice and the details of when, where and how it should be applied. Practical guidance will be also given on how to set up the bioheat transfer model using commercial software COMSOL.
Course details:
3 credits (CFU);
Spoken Language: English;
Assessment: written exam at the end of the course
