PhD program in Industrial Engineering

Educational goals

The PhD program in industrial engineering aims to train professional figures of high qualification, able to fit in mechanical, shipbuilding, aerospace and management industries, both in national and international contexts. The training activities is aimed to provide the PhD students with an adequate knowledge of innovative design methodologies, technical-economic and energy-environmental analysis, management and control of industrial and manufacturing systems and subsystems that compose them. Special attention is also given to the preparation of students to scientific research, both theoretical and numerical or experimental, in universities and research centers.

The training courses and research objectives are in strong synergy with national and international companies in the sector, which in some cases have also funded additional grants. The permanence at Italian and especially foreign research centers, as well as the writing of scientific articles are always encouraged.

The PhD program is organized into different curricula, for the purpose of a better coordination and a more effective control on the achievement of educational goals. In this way it is possible to combine the traditional engineering education with interdisciplinary skills, with the potential to analyze complex systems, characterized by strong interactions among technical, technological, economic and social aspects.

Career opportunities

As already mentioned in the educational goals, the mission of the PhD program in Industrial Engineering is to train highly qualified professionals, able to fit in the mechanical, shipbuilding, aerospace and management industries, both in national and international contexts. The main career opportunities are in innovation and development of production, advanced design, planning and scheduling, and management of complex systems. The Doctors in Industrial Engineering will be able to find employment in aeronautical companies, space agencies, institutions for the production and conversion of energy, plant engineering companies, industries for automation and robotics, manufacturing companies for the production, installation, testing, maintenance and management of machines, lines and production departments. In addition to that, the interdisciplinary training will give to Doctors in Industrial Engineering the specific skills for the design and realization of all the systems for which the maximum operational reliability is required, to ensure performance, productivity, product quality and levels of safety in accordance to current regulations. Further but more limited employment opportunities are expected as freelance professional (management consultants, heat engineering, energy managers, etc.), in universities and in public and private research institutions.
